THE CHILD ALONE I The Unseen Playmate When children are playing alone on the
green, He
lies in the laurels, he runs on the grass, He
loves to be little, he hates to be big, 'T
is he, when at night you go off to your bed, |
II My Ship and I O
it's I that am the captain of a tidy little ship, For I mean to grow a little as the dolly
at the helm, O
it's then you'll see me sailing through the rushes and the reeds, |
III My Kingdom Down by a shining water well I
called the little pool a sea; And all about was mine, I said, I
played there were no deeper seas, And I must rise and leave my dell, |
IV Picture-books in Winter Summer fading, winter comes – Water now is turned to stone All the pretty things put by, We
may see how all things are How am I to sing your praise, |
V My Treasures These nuts, that I keep in the back of the
nest, This
whistle we made (and how clearly it sounds!) The
stone, with the white and the yellow and grey, But
of all my treasures the last is the king, |
VI Block City What
are you able to build with your blocks? Let
the sofa be mountains, the carpet be sea, Great is the palace with pillar and wall, This
one is sailing and that one is moored: Yet
as I saw it, I see it again, |
VII The Land of Story-books At
evening when the lamp is lit, Now,
with my little gun, I crawl There, in the night, where none can spy, These are the hills, these are the woods, I
see the others far away So
when my nurse comes in for me, |
VIII Armies in the Fire The
lamps now glitter down the street; Now
in the falling of the gloom Armies march by tower and spire Then
once again the glow returns; Blinking embers, tell me true |
IX The Little Land When
at home alone I sit In
that forest to and fro Through that forest I can pass Little thoughtful creatures sit When
my eyes I once again |
