Old Ford’s Hospital
FORD’S Hospital stands on the east side of Grey Friars Lane. It was founded by William Ford, a merchant stapler of the city, under his will dated 1509, and has been considerably enlarged from the original endowment. The building retains its original character and is one of the very finest pieces of Tudor domestic architecture extant. Timber frame work is always picturesque; this is moreover boldly and admirably designed, at once strong and homely. An entirely English piece of work, in a kind in which England has greatly excelled.
